Welcome
Hi, my name is Jonno Hill, and I am a Computation Arts student at Concordia University in Montreal Quebec. Through the course of my studies, I have had the opportunity to work in many different specific disciplines. This academic portfolio will serve as a small sample of the wide range of work that I have produced over the course of my studies, as well as the details behind the creation of these pieces.
Processing Experiments
The following images are taken from a series of variations on a project written in processing. Processing is a visual-oriented java-like programming environment. In my project I created a series of point-sized objects that were animated across the screen using a combination of sine and cosine functions. The result was an intricate and varied series of patterns. Screenshots of different variations of the program are pictured below. If you wish to download the source code to these projects and see them in action, download processing and then download this zip file. Several variations of the project are included.

Typography Experiments
The below works were all produced for a typography class in Computation Arts. We were encouraged to explore typography from a number of different mediums.

The above two works were the result of a project where we were to take a poem we liked, and use it as a basis of typographic expression. The first image represents an abstract use of type as an expression of the meaning of the poem, whereas the second image represents a legible re-appropriation of the text.

The above three images were a study in finding type in places it did not normally exist. The students took pictures of letters both real and interpreted. The images were then formatted and printed out to be used in a typographic arrangement. The above three images are my approach to the arrangement.
The final work was a typography experiment done in flash, using the first line of text from William Gibson's cyberpunk gem Neuromancer. In order to view this file, make sure you have flash player installed on your computer. Download Link
"Part One - Life" (Video)
"Life" is part one in a series of videos divided into four movements. "Life" focuses on the power of growth in the natural world, and the flourishing of an untouched planet. Footage is borrowed from documentaries, BBC's Planet Earth being the most notable of them. Editing is used to emphasize the elements intended for the theme, and to create a harmonious relationship between the footage and the sound used.
"Trains of Mind" (Video)
"Trains of Mind" is a project developed for a Computation Arts video course in the winter of 2008. The goal of the project was to bring together techniques we had learned in Adobe After Effects thus far. My project was a juxtaposition of music along with dialog and scenes from "No Maps for These Territories", "Dark City", and the classic Hitchcock film"Vertigo".
"BlueToothPick" (Video)
"BlueToothPick" is a short project conceived for a Computation Arts course in the fall of 2007. As an exercise, we were given an inanimate object with which we were to envision a fictional technological product. I was assigned a toothpick, and the above video was meant as a short and humorous advertisement for my product.
"Feed" (Video)
"Feed" is an experiment in audio-visual interaction. Quick edited sequences are overlayed with sound designed to emphasize the perceptual differences in a repeating series of images when combined with a changing aural landscape. The video used was derived from a pop music video by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Sound was recorded as it was created in real-time, and later added to the video. This project was conceived for DART 451, at Concordia University in Montreal.
